About Jim Dixon

Jim Dixon has spent his life in the pursuit and practice of ancient ways of knowledge. From childhood on, he has had the privilege of being the student of several extraordinary teachers in the Meditative, Martial, and Healing Arts.

After moving to Taos, New Mexico as a young man, he pursued the Rescue and Emergency Medical Arts (becoming a Certified EMT, a Swiftwater Rescue Technician, a National Ski Patrol Member, etc.) serving as a white-water river guide in summers and as a Ski Patroller in the Winters.

In May of 1989, as a member of Taos Search and Rescue, he was involved in a miraculous event, a rescue that changed his life forever, and led him to pursue the Art of Medicine full-time as his true life's calling.

For over 30 years he has continually focused and refined his abilities as a Doctor of Oriental Medicine (DOM, L.Ac., Dipl. Ac & CH), working in both hospital and out-patient clinical settings.  He has also served as a teacher in multiple disciplines, bringing unique skill sets to many students both in New Mexico and Hawai'i.

My Philosophy

Chinese medicine is a vast and complex field, containing within it almost every medical specialty imaginable. After 30 years of general practice,  where I saw, and treated, so many of the myriad things that could go wrong in life, I am moving into my favorite part of Taoist medicine, "Yang Sheng Medicine" or "The Way of Health and Longevity Medicine." This is a medicine designed solely to enhance health and well-being, in every realm -  physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

"To treat a disease after it has become manifest, is like waiting until you        are thirsty to begin digging a well."  This was said over 3000 years ago in conversations between the Yellow Emperor and his chief physician, Qi Po.

I come from the Inner Tradition of Chinese Medicine, where the  inner world (the spiritual, emotional and mental) is seen as primary. The physical, the spiritual, the emotional, the psychological - all must be treated together, for all are connected, and all will reflect each other.

Thus, in this medicine, for millennia, we treat everything together. Indeed, it could be said that the majority of modern illnesses, "the diseases of civilization," have their roots in the spiritual, emotional and psychological disharmony of the individual - often the cost of the continual stresses of the modern era, for which we humans are poorly adapted.

Medicine is a sacred art, throughout history it has always been viewed as such. The vows taken put it in the realm of a sacred trust.

As an art, it calls upon the very best of human abilities and traits; insight, compassion, integrity, intelligence, skill, courage, steadiness, and above all, kindness.
